How Do I Plant Tulip Bulbs?

Tulip bulbs are easy to grow in the ground or containers, with fall or winter being the best time to plant, depending on the climate. In cool climates, gardeners should plan on planting tulips around mid-fall, while in warmer climates, it is a good idea to wait until the winter months. Tulips rely on a period of chilling to allow the bulbs to develop so they will come…

Baker, California (population 735) is known as the “Gateway to Death Valley.” I was there yesterday when the temperature was a balmy 106°F. My family and I were driving back from Las Vegas (where I attended the Trivia Championship of North America — more about that in another post). I saw a sign on I-15 advertising Baker as the home of the “Worlds Tallest Thermometer” and decided to pull off the highway and take a gander. As it turns out, the 134-foot-tall thermometer has seen better days. The light bulb grid displays weren’t telling the temperature. They were showing random numbers and letters. Roadside America has more information about the thermometer, along with a photo of it. Notice that the thermometer in my photo now has BIG BOY painted on it — an unfortunate addition, if you ask me. (And take a look at the Bob mascot on the roof. It’s so off-model it makes me want to cry.) My advice: don’t go to Baker to see the world’s tallest thermometer. However, if you are in the mood for Greek food, Baker is a great place to go. We ate at the Mad Greek. We had roast chicken, hummus, and decent espresso. (I originally ordered Greek coffee, asking the counter person if it was sweet. She told me it was not sweet but it was strong. I said that was great, but when I tasted it it was very sugary and weak. Fortunately they exchanged it for an espresso.) The Mad Greek’s decor is as delightful as food. More photos after the jump….

My latest Guardian column, “Google’s YouTube policy for Android users is copyright extremism,” examines the theory of copyright behind Google’s announcement that it would bar people who unlocked their phones from using the new YouTube video store. This is the latest example of a new kind of copyright emerging in the 21st century, “configuration-right,” in which someone who makes a creative work gets a veto over how all the devices that can play or display that work must be configured. It’s a novel — and dangerous — proposition, akin to record companies telling which furniture you were allowed to move into the same room as your stereo, and to require that you close your window when the record was playing, lest your neighbors get some tunes for free. Which brings us back to where we started: unless you’re running a very specific version of Google’s software on your phone or tablet, you can’t “rent” movies on YouTube. Google - the vendor - and the studios - the rights holders - are using copyright to control something much more profound than mere copying. In this version of copyright, making a movie gives you the right to specify what kind of device can play the movie back, and how that device must be configured. This is as extreme as copyright gets, really. Book publishers have never told you which rooms you could read in, or what light bulbs you were allowed to use, or whether you could rebind the book or take it abroad with you. Broadcasters have never vetoed the design of radios. The extension of copyright to “configuration right” is a profound shift in the history of technology and culture. There are lots of reasons to want to run a non-stock OS on your Android phone; some versions allow you to assert fine-grained privacy controls, others add features useful to people with disabilities; others make it simpler to use cheap/free voice-over-IP for long-distance calls. There are at least as many reasons to want to redecorate and reconfigure your phone, your computer or your tablet as there are reasons to rearrange your kitchen or redecorate your bedroom. Google’s YouTube policy for Android users is copyright extremism…

Mental myths

The following statements are (pretty much) not true: • We use only 10 percent of our brains. • “Flashbulb memories” are precise, detailed and persistent. • It’s all downhill after 40 (or 50 or 60 or 70). • Men are from Mars, women are from Venus. “Top Ten Myths About the Brain” (Smithsonian)…

Around 1800, Italian scientist Jean Aldini zapped the brains of dead felons with electricity to make their bodies move. He later reported using the same technique to cure “melancholy.” This sounds like the history of electroconvulsive (shock) therapy, but those were actually the first experiments in transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS), tweaking the brain with very mild shocks, 1,000 times less intense than delivered by shock therapy. A resurgence in tDCS is now underway. (Experiment “Consent Video” above from the Berenson-Allen Center for Noninvasive Brain Stimulation.) Indeed, neuroscientists at the University of New Mexico are using a tDCS device powered by a 9-volt battery to see if 2 milliamps shocks to certain regions of the scalp can improve cognition and learning. Early results are promising. (In fact, tDCS may even prime neurons to respond to transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), a technique we’ve posted about on BB many times in which bursts from a magnetic coil near the head alter brain activity. TMS has been tested as a potential treatment for certain severe neurological and psychological disorders. Scientific journal Nature surveys the tDCS field in its latest issue. From Nature: Last year a succession of volunteers sat down in a research lab in Albuquerque, New Mexico to play DARWARS Ambush!, a video game designed to train US soldiers bound for Iraq. Each person surveyed virtual landscapes strewn with dilapidated buildings and abandoned cars for signs of trouble — a shadow cast by a rooftop sniper, or an improvised explosive device behind a rubbish bin. With just seconds to react before a blast or shots rang out, most forgot about the wet sponge affixed to their right temple that was delivering a faint electric tickle. The volunteers received a few milliamps of current at most, and the simple gadget used to deliver it was powered by a 9-volt battery. It might sound like some wacky garage experiment, but Vincent Clark, a neuroscientist at the University of New Mexico, says that the technique, called transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS), could improve learning. The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency funded the research in the hope that it could be used to sharpen soldiers’ minds on the battlefield. Yet for all its simplicity, it seems to work. Volunteers receiving 2 milliamps to the scalp (about one-five-hundredth the amount drawn by a 100-watt light bulb) showed twice as much improvement in the game after a short amount of training as those receiving one-twentieth the amount of current1. “They learn more quickly but they don’t have a good intuitive or introspective sense about why,” says Clark. The technique, which has roots in research done more than two centuries ago, is experiencing something of a revival. Clark and others see tDCS as a way to tease apart the mechanisms of learning and cognition. As the technique is refined, researchers could, with the flick of a switch, amplify or mute activity in many areas of the brain and watch what happens behaviourally. The field is “going to explode very soon and give us all sorts of new information and new questions”, says Clark. And as with some other interventions for stimulating brain activity, such as high-powered magnets or surgically implanted electrodes, researchers are attempting to use tDCS to treat neurological conditions, including depression and stroke. But given the simplicity of building tDCS devices, one of the most important questions will be whether it is ethical to tinker with healthy minds — to improve learning and cognition, for example. The effects seen in experimental settings “are big enough that they would definitely have real-world consequences”, says Martha Farah, a neuroethicist at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. “Neuroscience: Brain buzz” IEEE Spectrum on brain zapping to treat depression - Boing Boing Turning on your inner savant - Boing Boing Mind control with sound and light - Boing Boing How magnets affect the human brain - Boing Boing…

Is your calcium supplement increasing your risk of heart attack, stroke and sudden death?

Question: Women are told that in order to prevent osteoporosis they should take 1,200 - 1,500 mgs of calcium and half that of magnesium, plus vitamin D for absorption. If I am taking a good superfood blend and I maintain a good diet, do I need to continue to take my Cal/Mag & Vitamin D supplements?

Response: An excellent question regarding the vast array of health options presented to us today. This is a common concern, particularly among those of us who have been taught that what we need in order to create or maintain health is a particular amount of specific minerals or vitamins or other isolated nutritional compounds. This advice is an outgrowth of the antiquated megavitamin era that is still being taught and practiced in certain health circles today.

While that era was helpful in that it made us aware of the value of some of the various components found within plants and clays and other natural resources, we are rapidly moving toward an era of a deeper understanding of how Mother Nature originally provided for the human being long before allopathic medicine and the megavitamin age were given the spotlight.

A “Stop Dead in Your Tracks and Rethink the Megavitamin Therapy Position” Study from New Zealand

A major New Zealand study found that taking calcium supplements raises your risk for heart attacks, strokes, and sudden death, and does nothing noteworthy for osteoporosis.

The researchers randomly assigned 1,471 postmenopausal women to take a placebo or 1,000 mg of calcium citrate daily for five years. The study actually expected to find that calcium supplements would reduce osteoporosis along with heart attacks and strokes. However, they found that those taking calcium had a 40% higher risk of heart attacks along with a greater risk for the composite of cardiovascular incidence, stroke and sudden death than the placebo group - and did nothing for osteoporosis that would justify these greater risks.

How can this be? We have been taught since the days of Adelle Davis that megavitamin therapy is the way to go. Yet I hear almost daily from people who have spent thousands upon thousands of dollars for many years — even decades — on what I call “fragmentary health products” (only fragments of Nature’s whole food resources), recommended by some of the best Naturopaths, Acupuncturists, Chiropractors, Nutritional Consultants, and product manufacturers, yet these earnest souls remain sick, battling with an ongoing series of hormonal, nutritional, toxicity and yeast imbalances.

How can this be? The reason is obvious — vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that are only fragments of their original whole food source are inherently imbalanced. They do not contain all of the other nutritional components that Nature knew were necessary to function properly in the human body. Fragments of whole foods do not function in the body the same as the original whole food itself.

Lessons from Original Whole Food Cultures

The cultures of today which still live in a more natural habitat, such as the Hunzas, the Okinawans, and the aboriginal tribes of Australia, maintain their vitality long into their late 80’s, 90’s and hundreds, partly because they live close to Nature, and partly because they grow their own food, or eat from the wild. Those cultures do not need megavitamins because they get all of their nutritional requirements from whole herbs, cultured foods, mineral-rich water sources, and foods grown on mineral-rich soils from crops watered with mineral-rich water.

So what is it about these original food sources that give these exceptional cultures their health and longevity even late in life, while America struggles to keep up (being listed an embarrassing 37th on the list of nations for quality of health), and the average American starts showing signs of physical degeneration long before puberty?

For one, whole foods, fresh herbs and unheated clays are nutritionally balanced. Nature made them this way for our benefit.

In truth, it is not nutritional abundance that counts, but nutritional balance that brings health to the human body.

The megavitamin philosophy attempts to create a semblance of balance by suggesting half as much magnesium as calcium (while others reverse that ratio), then goes on to say that if you take some vitamin D with it, it will assimilate even better. But, in the same breath, do they clue you in to the other minerals that influence, or are influenced by, calcium and magnesium?

Integrated Balance

For instance, calcium activity in the body is influenced by, not just magnesium, but phosphorous, chromium, iron, sulfur, fluoride, zinc, manganese and copper.

Iron activity in the body is influenced by aluminum, copper, manganese, iodine, zinc, phosphorous, and cobalt, in addition to calcium and magnesium.

Phosphorus activity is influenced by iron, sodium, beryllium, aluminum, copper, manganese, molybdenum, zinc, as well as calcium and magnesium.

Copper activity is influenced by silver, cadmium, iron, phosphorous, sulfur, molybdenum, potassium, mercury, zinc, as well as calcium and magnesium.

Magnesium is involved in over 300 metabolic processes in the body, yet is suppressed by the abundance of calcium.

Due to these delicate balancing relationships between all of the minerals naturally found in whole foods and herbs, or earthen resources like clays, humic substances, and original sea salt, giving the body an unnatural abundance of one or two minerals can indirectly initiate a chain reaction of detrimental effects on the usability of many other minerals and hundreds of metabolic functions throughout the body.

A Balance of Ratios

The point is, too much of any one mineral can throw off the availability, or workability, of several other minerals, because the entire list of 70+ minerals are interrelated. Sometimes they work for each other and sometimes they work against each other. They function as both antagonists and protagonists within their own group — the mineral kingdom.

This entire interrelationship is based on ratios. Too much calcium cancels out magnesium. Too much magnesium can result in difficulty breathing, excessively low blood pressure and an irregualr heartbeat. What counts in the mineral kingdom is not a mineral abundance, but a mineral balance of ratios.

The Basic Building Blocks of Nature

Minerals are the building blocks of hormones, vitamins, enzymes and amino acids. They are the building blocks of the DNA itself. Minerals, of a wide variety, are required for virtually every metabolic function in the body.

Do we dare consume less than the most comprehensive spectrum of mineral and nutritional complexes that Nature can provide? Do we dare alter the delicate balance of mineral and nutritional ratios that only Nature, at this point, knows how to assemble?

Which Will it Be? Lab Designed Megavitamin & Mineral Formulas or Nature’s Comprehensive Blends of Whole Earthen Substances?

Can a lab concocted assortment of 2-60 isolated minerals and vitamins, put together by the best minds of medicine, bring about the same kind of balance in the human body as a full 70+ mineral complex plus hundreds, even thousands, of phytonutrient compounds, assembled and balanced by the source of the body itself - the earth?

When you consume ginger, you get 477 known nutritional compounds (the most studied plant on earth).

When you consume yerba mate’ (a South American herb) you get 197 known nutritional compounds.

When you consume an organic apple you get over 10,000 nutritional compounds.

When you consume a clay, you get numerous mineral compounds and other life-building qualities in the form of macro minerals, trace minerals, angstrom (single atom) elements, electromagnetic and paramagnetic influences, isotopes, rare earths, humates, detoxification powers, and a host of other benefits that science is only now just beginning to comprehend.

Yet these benefits have been there for hundreds of thousands of years. We are just now waking up to them.

What has Mother Nature done that a laboratory full of great minds are not capable of doing? She has put together an amazing array of nutritional benefits that range from the simple mineral and vitamin, to the complex molecular compounds (phytonutrients) that are specific to various plants, to the friendly bacteria that assist in their digestion, to the electromagnetic and paramagnetic forces, to the etheric qualities, and many other attributes that science has only vague ideas about, or has yet to discover.

The wisest thing that science can do today is to just observe the healing powers of a natural plant, sea vegetable or clay in their raw, unaltered forms, and learn from them, then simply use them in their whole forms (if they want the same remarkable benefits that raw Nature provides).

Feeding ourselves only a small fragment (like just two minerals) of Nature’s extremely complex array of nourishing influences, is simply setting the stage for further imbalances down the road (as is borne out by the massive failure of today’s “fragmentary nutrition” to bring overall health to the human body).

Dis-ease is the sign of an inherent imbalance. So, what is the most effective route to restoring balance in the human body?

Is it really possible to create balance in the human body, (an organic and complex biological organism), with substances that are disconnected from their original organic, wholesome and balanced source?

It is time that we reconsider our societal fetish for the isolates, concentrates and synthetics of “fragmentary medicine”.

No one knows how to create balanced nutrition for the human body better than Mother Nature. Why mess with a good thing?

Restoring balance and health to the body is much simpler than it seems. The work has already been done for us. The resources are abundantly available. The human body is perfectly capable of healing itself when given the wholesome resources provided to us by Nature.

If it is a good source of calcium and magnesium in a proper balance that you seek, consider seaweeds, one the richest sources of magnesium known, balanced by hundreds of other minerals and phytonutrients, including calcium. Or try our Ancient Mineral Blend, a magnesium rich source of fossilized plant matter combined with Himalayan Salt and Humic Substances - all of which are naturally balanced earthen resources.

If it is D that you seek, spend more time with your face to the sun, even if it is a cloudy day, and notice how nourishing it feels (goes right to the gut).

If it is bone health that you seek, consider boswellia, white oak bark, nettles, and horsetail, along with full spectrum mineral clays rich in amorphous silica (the key to mineral assimilation). And if you are willing to take a walk on the ‘wild side’, investigate the “forbidden” comfrey plant (AKA “knitbone”), recognized by Rudolf Steiner and many others as one of the seven most beneficial herbs on the planet.

Of course, common sense says to also consider what else might be contributing to the deterioration of bones (or any other health abnormality in the body), and correct that as well - two of the most obvious being the consumption of sugars and other acid-promoting or fungus-promoting foods and drinks - with pastries, breads, coffee, oils, and yes, nuts and nut butters being among the worst offenders in our society today.

Yet an abundance of a good, mineral-rich seaweed blend (minimum of 1 ounce per day) can go a long way toward balancing out even these health-deteriorating substances and restoring the pH back to the ideal, slightly alkaline level. A good blend of seaweeds, algae and other superfoods will nourish not only the bones, the blood, and the heart, but the entire hormonal, nervous and digestive systems as well. They provide a massive array of building blocks for every metabolic function in the body — bar none.

The Ocean Water, Seaweed Juice and Lymph Fluid Connection

It may be surprising to learn that ocean water, the juice of seaweeds and human lymph fluids have the same chemical mineral composition. Dr. Rene’ Quinton discovered that a diluted version of pure seawater used as a complete replacement for blood allowed the natural biology of a dog to rebuild its full red blood cell count within four days. The dog continued to live another five happy years.

There is no synthetic compound, isolated nutrient, or other fragment of a whole food that is capable of accomplishing such an astounding event! Fragments of whole foods common to the megavitamin world, and the toxic, synthetic compounds typical of the allopathic world, are simply unable to provide the body with the balanced nutrition it needs to heal itself.

Only wholesome natural substances, unaltered from their original state, are able to properly address the thousands of nutritional and energetic requirements of this extremely complex organism called “the human body”.

“Fragmentary Medicine” or Whole Foods?

Chemical allopathic medicine and megavitamin therapy have been developing their “medicines” now for less than 200 years, with their “most advanced” approaches being developed within the last 50 years or so. Mother Nature has been at the business of developing health products now for over 5 billion years! She has more experience and her resources are not only more comprehensive, but more compatible for the human body. She has earned our trust.

Whole seaweeds, algae, phytoplankton, sea salt, herbs, medicinal mushrooms, clays, humic/fulvic substances, bee products, cultured foods, deep, underground aquifer water, sunlight, highly ionized evergreen forest air, chi gong type exercises, and self-grown garden produce are the most effective healing resources known for the human body. They abundantly provide the balanced nutrition and energetic support it needs to simply heal itself.

Rest assured, Mother Nature has not abandoned us. There really is an answer — and the answers are simpler than we may have thought.

If we are looking for something to improve the health of the human body, natural whole food resources are more likely to provide us with the balanced health-building qualities that we seek. The wise among us will reach first for whole food nutrition before trying anything else!

A blessing on your path to the best of health!

Radio Frequency Waves (RF) and Microwave Radiation are produced by all wireless communication devices and cell phone transmission towers. The are invisible and exist almost everywhere. Current technology is now using pulsed digital signals which increase the risks of exposure. Obtaining an RF free sleeping area is important because we spend 1/3 of our life asleep. The goal is to reduce long term, low level exposure to Radio Frequency (RF) Radiation. Obtaining accurate exposure readings is very important. Some of our competitors’ meters do not measure pulsed digital signals. Our complete line of RF Meters will measure pulsed digital signals including the RF-Detector. Please visit our EMF Meter, RF Meter and Body Voltage Meter pages for Bau-Biologie approved testing equipment. See below for our suggestions on how to lower your RF exposure at home:

Avoid Living near cell phone transmission towers or any other radio/TV transmitter.

Have your sleeping area evaluated by a Bau-Biologist for Radio Frequency (RF) radiation from cell phone towers and all other wireless radiation sources. Bau-Biologie Exposure Standards indicate RF radiation should be below 1 μW/m2 (microWatts per square meter) and below 0.1 μW/m2 for digital pulsed radiation signals.

If elevated RF Radiation is found, determine weather its source in internal or external to the building. If the source is external (local cell phone tower), installing RF shielding fabric curtains, a bed shielding canopies or RF reflective window foil is recommended. If the source is internal, find the source and turn it off (cordless phone, wireless router). Seek the professional advice of a trained Bau-Biologist for more protection solutions.

Avoid the use of cordless telephones. Most new models (DECT) base stations constantly transmit RF radiation even when they are not in use.

If a cordless phone is necessary, choose 900 MHz cordless phone before higher frequency phones. Most 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz phones base stations constantly broadcast where as the majority of 900 MHz phones do not. Also the 900 MHz cordless phones use an analogue signal where the 2.4 GHz and the 5.8 GHz phones use more biologically damaging pulsed digital signals.

Avoid the use of a microwave oven. If using a microwave oven, leave the area. The RF will cover a large area (30-40 feet and more).

Avoid eating or drinking microwaved food or water. Don’t feed microwaved food or milk to babies or young children.

Avoid the use of wireless baby monitors. Use a hard wired intercom system.

Avoid the use of an RF security system, use the hard wired one.

Avoid the use wireless router internet sharing devices. Use a hard wired type. (Ethernet Cat 5 cables

If required, use cellular telephones for emergency back-up. Use them with the SLT1 headset.

Avoid speaking on a cell phone in the car without an external antenna. The RF waves will be reflected back at you from the metal chassis, doors and roof magnifying the radiation. Also, the cell phone has a hard time sending its signal out of the car because of the metal chassis, and increases its transmitting strength to compensate.

Avoid the use of a cellular phone if pregnant.

Do not let a child use a cellular phone.

Minimize your exposure to medical and dental x-rays.

Home EMF and RF Prevention Tips

The sleeping area is particularly important because we send 1/3 of our life sleeping. The goal is to reduce long term, low level exposure to AC Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) and Radio Frequency (RF) Radiation. Obtaining accurate exposure measurements is also very important. Please visit our EMF Meter, RF Meter and Body Voltage Meter pages for Bau-Biologie approved testing equipment. See below for our suggestions on how to lower your EMF exposure at home:

Sleep in a room that has been electromagnetically evaluated. Bau-Biologie Exposure Standards for sleeping areas indicate that Magnetic and Electric Fields should be as low as possible, preferably under 0.2 mG (milliGauss) or 200 nT (nanoTesla) for Magnetic Fields and below 1 V/m (Volt per Meter) for Electric Fields. Ideal Body Voltage readings should be below 10 mV (milliVolts).

Shut off the electricity in your bedroom during sleeping hours. This can be accomplished manually by turning off the breakers or automatically with a demand switch. This will eliminate electric field exposure while sleeping. Seek the professional advise of a trained Bau-Biologist for protection solutions.

Avoid placing a bed on a shared wall with a neighbouring apartment if in a townhouse or apartment building. Your neighbours may have electronic equipment or electrical appliances on the other side of the wall emitting high electromagnetic fields.

Have your sleeping are evaluated for radio frequency (RF) radiation from cell phone towers, and all other wireless radiation sources. Bau-Biologie exposure standards indicate RF radiation should be below 1 μW/m2 (microWatts per square meter) and below 0.1 μW/m2 for digital pulsed radiation signals.

If elevated Radio Frequency Radiation is found, determine weather its source in internal or external to the building. If the source is external (local cell phone tower), installing RF shielding fabric curtains, a bed shielding canopies or RF reflective window foil is recommended. If the source is internal, find the source and turn it off (cordless phone, wireless router). Seek the professional advice of a trained Bau-Biologist for protection solutions.

Avoid the use of cordless telephones. Most new models (DECT) constantly transmit RF radiation even when they are not in use.

Remove all electronic devices from all occupied bedrooms.

Avoid the use of an electric blanket. The will produce high electric and magnetic fields.

If possible, sleep in a bed that has no metal parts, such as innersprings or a metal frame.

Avoid using metal head and foot boards because the electric fields will be enhanced.

Keep metal way from the sleeping area, such as metal bookshelves, end tables or metal pole lamps.

Use a battery operated alarm clock rather than an AC electric alarm clock.

Avoid purchasing a home within 500 feet of high voltage power lines. This distance will vary according to the power of the lines. A magnetic and electric field strength measurement would determine the exact distance.

Avoid running electric extension cords under chairs, beds and couches.

If possible, maintain a distance of 10 feet from the television and other electronic devices and appliances.

Avoid the use of fluorescent and halogen lights, use incandescent full spectrum lighting.

Avoid the use of electric motors, such as an electric can opener, shaver or toothbrush. Rechargeable or battery operated toothbrushes and shavers are preferred to plug-in models.

Consider replacing an ungrounded 2 wire lamp cord with a 3 wire shielded power cord to reduce electric fields. Your lamp may have to be customized in a specialty lighting store or by an electrician and meet UL and CSA approvals.

Stand back 3 feet or more from operating motors such as juicers and blenders.

Avoid the use of hand held hairdryers. If required, keep the motor and the cord as far from the body as possible.

Avoid using the over head fan while in the bathroom. If it must run maintain a distance of 10 feet.

If possible, maintain a distance of 10 feet from the heater coils when cooking with an electric stove or oven.

If purchasing a computer monitor locally, screen it with a Magnetic Field Detector or gauss meter. The latest standards require that AC magnetic field be 1 mG (100 nanoTesla) or less one foot from the monitor.

Don’t give an older computer to a child without first measuring the magnetic fields it produces.

Avoid the use of a sewing machine during pregnancy or balancing a laptop on the abdomen.

Automobile EMF & RF Prevention Tips

Some of us spend a great deal of time in a car, therefore it is important to choose a vehicle that has low EMF and RF emissions. The goal is to reduce long term, low level exposure to Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) and Radio Frequency (RF) Radiation. Unfortunately little can be done with the automobile. There is also very little data recorded on this subject so each automobile would require a measurement to check its emissions. Obtaining accurate exposure readings is very important. Please visit our EMF Meter, RF Meter and Body Voltage Meter pages for Bau-Biologie approved testing equipment. See below for our suggestions on how to lower your EMF and RF exposure in automobiles:

The gasoline-ignition engine has spark plugs to ignite the fuel-air mixture. The ignition (spark) system is a tremendous source of broad spectrum RF Radiation as well as Magnetic Fields.

The car body is used as part of the electrical system, considerable electrical emissions exist inside an automobile.

The alternator is a strong source of Magnetic Fields.

The diesel engine with mechanical fuel injection has no spark plugs at all. An electric spark is not required therefore lower Magnetic Field emissions

The car stereo is a large source of EMF, even when powered off.

Keep distance form the audio speakers which emit large magnetic fields.

The air conditioning and heating fan generate large magnetic fields.

Most new cars have a satellite communication system and can transmit high levels of RF radiation.

New hybrid vehicles will emit high electric and magnetic fields.

Office EMF Prevention Tips

Achieving a low AC EMF emission office environment is difficult because of the constant use of electronic equipment. The goal is to reduce long term, low level exposure to Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) and Radio Frequency (RF) Radiation. Obtaining accurate exposure measurements is also very important. Please visit our EMF Meter, RF Meter and Body Voltage Meter pages for Bau-Biologie approved testing equipment. See below for our suggestions on how to lower your EMF exposure in the office:

Measure the Electric and Magnetic Fields that your monitor produces. LCD monitors are not always the best choice. Measuring with approved test equipment is the only way to know for sure. Use Shielded AC Power Cords and power bars for all computer or electronic equipment.

Plug your computer and electronic devices into a grounded 3-holed outlet.

Use a radiation-reducing grounded glare guard on computer monitors to reduce EMF radiation.

If possible use a telephone with a cord for the bulk of your calls.

Only use a cellular phone for emergency back-up or with the SLT1 Headset.

Beware of Magnetic and Electric Fields from personal computers, electric typewriters, calculators, desk lamps and measure their strength with an approved Electric and Magnetic Field detector.

Use a manual pencil sharpener rather than an electric one.

Maintain distance from the rear and sides of a neighbour’s computer monitor.

Locate the buildings electric panels, transformers, etc. and do not sit near them.

Keep wiring, surge protectors, power bars and extension cords 5 feet away from any body part.

Maintain minimum distance of 10 feet from copiers, fax machines and other office equipment.

Use a full-spectrum incandescent lamp (grounded if possible), rather than a fluorescent or halogen light if you have the option.

If using a laptop, buy one with a 3-prong plug. Run it off the battery routinely. If it is not possible to purchase a 3-prong plug, ground the chassis of the laptop. This will eliminate the large electric field caused by the ungrounded laptop.

If carrying a pager, cell phone, or any electronic device regularly rotate it around the body.

Avoid congregating or sitting near the microwave oven when it is on. The RF radiation can infest a large area.

Avoid work areas that use wireless networking and wireless phones if possible.

Electrical EMF Prevention Tips

A properly installed electrical system plays a key roll in the AC Electromagnetic Field (EMF) Pollution levels in a building. Proper grounding can significantly reduce Electric Fields. Neutral wire isolation can reduce unwanted Magnetic Fields thus eliminating Net Currents. It is important to reduce long term, low level exposure to Electric and Magnetic Fields. Obtaining accurate exposure readings is also very important.

Seek the professional advice of a trained Bau-Biologist.

Shut off the electricity in your bedroom during sleeping hours. This can be accomplished manually by turning off the breakers or automatically with a Demand Switch. This will eliminate electric field exposure while sleeping.

Avoid placing a bed on a shared wall with a neighbouring apartment if in a townhouse or apartment building. Your neighbours may have electronic equipment or electrical appliances on the other side of the wall.

Remove all dimmer switches used in the house. They emit high magnetic fields and cause dirty electricity.

Verify that all circuits in the house are properly grounded.

Use 3 wire shielded cable (BX) for wiring a home. The metallic jacket shields Electric Fields.

Plug 3-wire appliances into working 3-wire outlets.

Locate the power panel at least 15 feet from living / sleeping areas.

Locate hot water heater (electric) at least 10 feet from living/sleeping areas.

Locate clothes dryer 14 feet from living/sleeping areas.

Most new Ground Fault Interrupter (GFI)’s generate constant Magnetic Fields and dirty electricity.

Install a non-metallic junction (Dielectric Union) where the metal water pipe enters the ground. (Just after the water meter) This will help prevent stray ground current from entering your home and infest the water pipes.
