Open Question: Should I use a colon or a semi colon here?

I’m writing a short story for English homework, and I’m not sure whether to use a semi colon or a colon in this sentence:
As her eyes tried to adjust to the deep black of the attic, it seemed to Suzy that something was glowing: a pale fluorescent light that was dancing in front of her eyes, mocking her.

Open Question: Gnats hovering around seedlings?
Author: adminMay 17
I have started plants from seeds for decades and never had a problem with gnats. I have fluorescent lights on chains in the basement so I can raise or lower them accordingly. My seeds have always germinated perfectly and flourished.
I’m in North Central Illinois, so they can’t go outside yet, they have to stay in basement for another couple of weeks.
This year, there are tiny gnats hovering around the plants. What can I use to get rid of them. The only thing I did different this year is that I used some Jiffy Peat Pellets for a few things. Mostly I have tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers, some herbs and a few flowers. Got any suggestons?
Excellent advice from all of you. I have a small portable greenhouse that I put on my deck to harden off plants, a few at a time. Maybe I’ll set that up now and hope that I don’t have to bring everything into the garage if it gets cold.
I will never use Peat Pellets again. I’ve always used Schultz Seed Starter Mix and had excellent luck. Thanks guys.
Resolved Question: Curious about saltwater fish keeping? Help?
Author: adminMay 17
So since I was like 4 all the fish tanks in my house were freshwater, but I really like saltwater. I got a 10 gallon tank, fully cycled, and I have brackish fish (figure 8 puffer, and maybe gobies when I upgrade my tank in the summer) and I’m going to high school soon. Luckily I’m transferring because my old school was way too competitive, and my ADD doesn’t help either, but anyway I will have more time to continue my hobby and I was wondering about saltwater fish? My dad keeps saying “don’t get it, its too hard, I have over 30 years of experience and its too hard” blah blah blah. I was just wondering what they need? My dad said he’s pretty sure that I can’t use an ordinary 10 gallon, I would need a cube or something that doesn’t have those specific glued frames. I was wondering what else I would need? I already have aquarium salt, but they are for my brackish fish.
Is it true that saltwater fish need all of these below:
-fluorescent light
-live coral
-sand
-live saltwater food (brine shrimp)
Like I said I’m going to high school, do you think I can manage? I know the basic outlines of fish keeping, how to cure basic diseases (ick, parasite, hole in head) and I know how to cycle a tank both with fish and without, I’m just not the most sensible with stocking ideas. Could I manage? How much harder is it compared to freshwater?
If you could make two lists, one with salt water and one with freshwater to show me differences, that would be great. Also, I have sensitive skin, which I’m worried about, you know, getting the salt in it and stuff.
Open Question: Can someone please help me chose between two different lighting kits for a starting Photography Studio?
Author: adminMay 16
Hello,
I have been working with many photographers in the past and just now got an opportunity to open my own studio. As I’ starting to gather all of the necessary equipment that I don’t yet have, I realized that something that I honestly don’t know much about is lighting (since I have always been working with someone else’s and have never thought about opening my own studio in the past- please don’t comment on this, I already feel stupid about it)
After doing a lot of research, I have narrowed it down to 2 different kits. They are:
Smith-Victor KSB-1250F 3-Light Fluorescent Economy SoftBox Kit with Mini-Boom (120VAC)
and
Westcott Strobelite 3 Light Educational Kit
Please share with me your experience with these lights, what the positives and negatives of each one are, and if you think one is better to get for a small, start up studio. If there are other sets out there that are great and cost about the same, please let me know what you use, or what you would suggest.
Thank you so much for your time!
Voting Question: Help with my paper for John Updikes A&P?
Author: adminMay 16
John Updike was born in 1932 in Shillington, Pennsylvania. Updike attended Harvard University and was the editor of the Harvard Lampoon. After being hired by the New Yorker Updike was published with “A&P” in 1961 and was considered a new type of New Yorker short story fiction writing. Updike was awarded multiple times with a large array of achievements, however, his biggest was the Pulitzer prize in 1982. Updike was a very famous author in American literature and continued writing until his death in 2009.
Sammy, a 19 year old who works as a cashier at the A&P grocery store. Sammy goes from a nonexistent cog in the corporate machine to taking control over his life, however, those liberties also come with the consequences of self control. In the first half of the story he is unnamed and is passive by only noting mentally what the girls are doing and how they act. In the second half of the story he changes into owning himself with his identity; he is named and takes action by quitting his job as a way of stating his independence from his bonds in the corporate lifestyle he feels trapped in. Sammy looks at the girls as objects and agrees with how they are out of place in the A&P store while wearing bikinis, however, as he changes to focusing on his individuality and actions of quitting he starts to see them not purely physical attractions but as girls who need his help against the onslaught of Lengels harsh words. Quitting also plays a role in looking chivalrous to the girls and being able to create a new image for Sammy. After Sammy tells Lengel his manager that he is quitting he goes outside to gain attention for his actions that was directed towards the girls. Sammy finds himself alone with only a feeling of dread. That maybe life wouldn’t have been so bad just staying with the crowd and becoming one of the sheep he is so detested by.
“She had sort of oaky hair that the sun and salt had bleached…but I didn’t mind. The longer her neck was, the more of her there was.” (Updike, A&P) Sammy really focuses in on the sexual appeal of these girls and provides significant details on their appearances. Sammy also focuses in a lot of the cog in society aspect by using words like sheep and cattle. “The sheep pushing their carts down the aisle — the girls were walking against the usual traffic (not that we have one-way signs or anything) — were pretty hilarious.” (Updike) By referring to the customers as sheep he doesn’t really pay any attention to the average customer who comes in wearing normal everyday attire; he pays specific attention to the three girls that are different from what he is used to seeing. The girls represent freedom to Sammy and the ability to escape being a simple mechanism for society. Stokesie is Sammy’s coworker and they both ogle and make jokes in regards to the three girls Sammy feels different from him like working in the A&P store; becoming a manager, and anything above it just is not what he wants in his life.
Imagery and symbolism play a major role in the story. The girls bathing suits can be seen as the contrast between the A&P setting; the people wearing normal attire, the fluorescent lighting, and the church going strict manager. The bathing suits which Sammy at first only thought about physically could stand for the idea of breaking the social normality in which he finds himself trapped in. The girls are doing the opposite of what is expected of them and as such Sammy can see it as a sort of freedom. The Kingfish Fancy Herring Snacks in Pure Sour Cream gives a stark contrast between the life that Queenie lives and what his own family endures; Sammy sees the girls parents in “Her father and the other men were standing around in ice-cream coats and bow ties and the women were in sandals picking up herring snacks on toothpicks off a big plate and they were all holding drinks the color of water with olives and sprigs of mint in them.” (Updike) there is an air of superiority given to her family in Sammy’s viewpoint of her rich and luxurious lifestyle. Compared to Sammy’s family which is “When my parents have somebody over they get lemonade and if it’s a real racy affair Schlitz in tall glasses with “They’ll Do It Every Time” cartoons stenciled on.” (Updike) Sammy is imagining his own family and how they drink a working class brew of beer instead of cocktails and that they are below her level of sophistication which makes him realize that he is not on the same level in society as Queenie.
When Sammy decides to quit his job in retaliation against Lengel’s remarks he does it to get the attention of the girls as a show of his masculinity but he also does it to break free of his bonds in society. “That’s policy for you. Policy is what the kingpins want. What the others want is juvenile delinquency.” (Updike) The kingpins can be seen as the normal society what the people imagine as normal and to them what is not seen as normal is just juvenile delinquency and Sammy wants to be free from the kingpins even if it means becoming a juvenile delinquent. “”I know you don’t,” I said. “But I do.” I pull the bow at the back of my apron and start shrugging it off my shoulders. A couple of customers that had been heading for my slot begin to knock against each other, like scared pigs in a chute.” (Updike) When Sammy pulls off his apron and bow tie it symbolizes his detachment from society’s rules and again adds to the idea of normal people being she

Resolved Question: Did Al Gore invent the friggin’ atom?
Author: adminMay 15
It bugs the devil outta me how he politicized the simplest things. Like spiral fluorescent bulbs.
Long before brother Al blessed them, I’d already switched my business to SFL’s as it requires lots of individual lights and incandescent bulbs are basically power-sucking heating elements.
When dems find out I use them, they automatically (smugly; INcorrectly) assume I have a shrine to Al-mighty. Repubs think the same and keep a distance.
Stupidity like this is what has demonstrated to me, beyond a doubt, that many - if not most - voters follow emotions and sound-bitten politics rather than logic.
I’m now independent as it seems impossible to belong to a party and exercise unemotional, rational logic.
…
@Donald K - they’re NOW called CFL, almost exclusively. They weren’t always. And, as I say, I got into it more than 11 years ago when they were called more names than now.

Open Question: Lighting Layout and Single Line Diagrams for Building Designs?
Author: adminMay 15
Here is a single line diagram of an electrical design for buildings.
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/855/picture1om.jpg/
I started doing the illumination calculation (zonal cavity method) and layouted the necessary number of lighitng fixtures on the drawing.
Now I wanted to wire them with switches of course and connect them to a power source. So by wiring you group the fixtures and be connected to a specific circuit. There would only be limited number of fixtures to be connected to a certain circuit depending on the capacity of the circuit breakers.
My problem is that I am not sure that given that Single line diagram above, how to calculate the total load to be connected to a certain circuit and thus the number of fixtures to be connected. There are 5 circuits shown on the diagram.
For example, i have a fixture that says” 4×36 Watts fluorescent lamp”. So how many lamps should be connected to circuit one(the on the leftmost side on the diagram).
Please teach me a general solution to solve this. Thank you very much…

Congratulations on your new, healthy child,

The mailman arrived to the vacant house of 66 Luc circle and creaked open the mailbox and placed the letter inside with a thud. He turned to leave, feeling a prickling on the back of his neck. He turned back towards the dark house, his eyes squinting for any sign of movement in the faraway windows. He took an uneasy step forward and dropped to the ground, cold and still as ice. Hundreds of miles away in a brightly-lit nursery, a newborn awoke with a start, opening his huge, jet-black eyes.
Chapter One: Enemies by fate
The bright fluorescent lights of a dingy orphanage room flicked on and a middle aged woman who resembled a vulture stalked towards the center of the room to a small bed that had a sleeping child on it. “Up!” she screeched, pulling the threadbare blanket to the floor. The boy startled awake, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. “I’m up, I’m up” he grumbled, sliding out of bed as the woman walked out, slamming the door shut. The boy was small, with messy dark hair that looked as though it had been sheared by someone who just wanted to get the job done. He had a pale face, his features nothing out of the ordinary. His eyes, however, were green with black pupils dilated to the point that you almost could not see the green. He stumbled forward towards the closet, squinting his eyes against the bright light. He pulled open the small door and took out the small gray uniform off the hanger-this was the only item of clothing in there. He dressed into the uniform that, despite being small, hung loosely on his miniature frame. He walked out the door, peering down the long gray hallway-everything here seemed to be gray with a sort of quiet suffering. He trotted down the hallway towards the winding stairs, looking over the balcony. “Ah! Here he is, the darling thing” said the same vulture-like woman in a sickenly sweet voice. “Why don’t you come down here and meet these nice people?” she gestured towards a couple standing a few feet from her. The boy looked at the couple closely, there was something odd about their overall stature; fluid, but stiff. Inflexible, but graceful. They were odd.
The boy walked down the staircase towards the three people, taking his time. “Come on dear, don’t keep them waiting” said the vulture woman in the same sweetly ill voice, this time holding a note of malice and warning. He picked up his pace, stopping a few feet short of the trio. The couple stared at him. He stared back. “Introduce yourself now” said the vulture. He gave her a glance before looking back at the other two, his eyes now engulfed by the black dilation of his pupils. “My name is Lance. Lance Detris.” Lance walked away, back to his cold dreadful room, back to his sanctuary.
The couple turned towards the vulture woman questiongly. She rushed to explain, “he’s a bit antisocial, but not to worry, he’d be perfect to adopt.” The couple made no acknowledgement that the woman said anything. At last, one of the two spoke up, a woman. The woman said, “he’s intriguing. He reminds me of someone I know.”
The vulture woman looked surprised at this revelation, her eyes widening comically. “Oh, does he?” she let out a shrill false giggle. “Well then, I guess he’ll be up for adoption? Yes, yes indeed. How lovely. What are your surnames?” she said very fast. The couple looked at each other. The strange woman turned back slowly, her face catatonic, and spoke. “Mr. and Mrs. Devlyn.”
