After solving a problem, new problems are often created. A classic example was the use of DDT to control malaria-carrying mosquitoes. Malaria cases declined, but the consequences on the environment, to osprey eggs in particular, lasted for decades. In public health, we constantly weigh the risks and benefits of our decisions. The following scenarios are contemporary decisions with the potential to impact the health of human populations and/or environment. Choose one of the situations and formulate a risk/benefit analysis for the decision. You may want to consult sources beyond your textbook.

Scenario1: With the escalating costs of energy, the demand for petroleum, and fears concerning greenhouse gases, efforts have been undertaken to provide more energy efficient devices. The most basic of these is the incandescent light bulb. Compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) are now readily available. Australia became the first nation to ban incandescent bulbs beginning in 2010. The US will gradually phase out of the bulbs in favor of CFLs between 2012 and 2014. Discuss the controversy surrounding this transition in formulating your risk/benefit analysis.

Scenario 2: Pest management can be challenging. Society has long sought alternatives to chemical pesticides with potential human/environmental toxicity. A recent trend, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), seeks the least toxic means to combat a given pest including pheromones, predacious species and other methods. Weigh the risks associated with each methodology to formulate your risk/benefit analysis and determine which of these are the most viable.

I’ll be getting two white’s tree frogs as soon as I get my terrarium which should be tomorrow or the next day. I have done plenty of research on White tree frogs I have everything need except for the terrarium it self and light bulbs. I’m still looking for lights and wondering what would be the best. I know they don’t need UVB lighting but they need it simply for heat, and to stimulate day/night. Anyhow I’m stuck which bulbs to get. Which one will produce enough heat to keep it around 85 or do I need my heat lamp on as well? But the two bulbs I would buy would be two of these http://www.amazon.com/Repti-Glo-Compact-Fluorescent-Spectrum-Terrarium/dp/B00101IC7G/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top. And the other would just purchase a regular house bulb for my other lamp, what watt would I need with that also?
